One of the most common questions I get as a photographer on the Central Coast is:

“What should we wear for our photos?”

And I totally get it! Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos look and feel—especially with the dreamy backdrops we have here in Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, Oceano, and Avila Beach.

Here’s your go-to guide to feeling confident, comfortable, and camera-ready for your next session!

👗 1. Keep It Timeless & Neutral

Soft, earthy tones like cream, beige, sage, rust, or light denim always photograph beautifully—especially against our natural landscapes like sandy beaches, golden dunes, and coastal bluffs. These colors keep the focus on you and your connection, not just your clothes.

Colors that always work on the Central Coast:

  • Soft whites, ivory, and tan
  • Olive green and sage
  • Dusty blue and slate
  • Terracotta and rust
  • Muted blush or peach

💡 Avoid neon, harsh black, or super bright patterns—they tend to distract and clash with our softer beach tones.

🧥 2. Add Texture, Layers & Movement

Flowy dresses, linen shirts, denim jackets, or cozy knits bring dimension and movement to your photos. A dress that catches the ocean breeze? Magical. A layered outfit for a family beach session? Effortless and elevated.

Textures like:

  • Lace, linen, cotton, denim, knits
  • Subtle prints (think floral, stripes, or small dots)

They help create visual interest without taking over the frame.

For group or family photos, I always say: coordinate, don’t clone. Choose a color palette (2–3 complementary tones) and let each person express themselves within it. Think soft blues, neutrals, and warm earth tones that flow together without everyone wearing the exact same thing.

  • Pismo Beach or Oceano Dunes? Flowy fabrics, barefoot vibes, and sandals look great.
  • Avila Beach cliffs or Grover Beach boardwalk? Add a cute hat, jean jacket, or boots for a more styled look.

Think about what fits the location vibe and makes you feel like you. If you wouldn’t wear stilettos in the sand—skip them! Comfort and confidence are key.
